Horley Additional Needs Showcase: service summary

On the 29th September we held an Additional Needs service showcase at YMCA Horley Young People and Family Centre in Horley. Thank you to those who showcased on the day and to everyone who attended.

Services who attended the showcase

Whether or not you could make it, we wanted to share the details of all the fantastic services who kindly attended the day.

  • SEND Advice Surrey provides impartial information, advice and support to parents, carers, children, and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) aged 0 to 25 years.
  • Learners Single Point of Access (L-SPA) offers help and support if you have a concern about the development and/or learning needs of a child in Surrey. Both parents and practitioners working with children in Surrey are welcome to call the L-SPA. It is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, all year round (except Bank Holidays) on 0300 200 1015.
  • Surrey Early Support Service provides support to families of children aged 0 to 5 who have disabilities or complex medical needs. They will give you information about support that is available to you and your family. They will visit you at home, keep in touch with you regularly, make referrals and applications to services you want to access and offer support through groups and family support.
  • Surrey Specialist Support Service, take a multi-agency approach to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in their educational setting. Services may work with pupils on an individual referral basis or provide wider training and development to the education setting itself.
  • Transition team supports young people with disabilities, who also have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP). Transition is when you start planning for life as an adult and when moving from services for children to services for adults.
  • Surrey Family Information Service is a signposting and enquiry service for all families across Surrey. Access our websites (which includes the Local Offer for children and young people 0-25 years with additional needs), directories and social media for advice, support and signposting.
  • Horley Young People and Family Centre supports families to find solutions to the parenting and relationships challenges they face and to grow in confidence to manage future difficulties. The aim of the family centre is to help families build their own resilience and self-reliance.
  • Action for Carers supports carers of all ages across Surrey by providing advice and support. The support they offer can be by phone, through face-to face meetings, support groups and workshops. They also provide benefits advice, advocacy, give practical guidance on moving and handling, and provide a wealth of information and free resources.
  • Surrey Young Carers can provide support and opportunities to meet, and have fun with, other children and young people in similar positions. They offer support to all across Surrey and from every type of family. You might be looking after a brother or sister with autism, or a parent with a disability.
  • Learning Space is a children and young people's mental health charity based in Surrey with over 20 years' experience of working with children, young people and their families. The focus of their work is to grow self-esteem, confidence and resilience so that children and young people are better able to manage change, respond to challenges in their lives and to celebrate who they are.
  • Family Voice Surrey champions the needs and rights of families with additional needs in Surrey. This includes families with children or young adults up to the age of 25 who have special educational needs, chronic illnesses, including mental health conditions, or disabilities.
  • National Autistic society (NAS) Surrey Branch is a parent-to-parent support group with around 1500 members who are parents, professionals, and people with autism in Surrey. It provides information, support groups, talks, parent courses & programmes and family activities, along with representing the interests of parents to service providers.
  • Caleidoscope is a non for profit organisation supporting families with autistic children and professionals who support autistic individuals, together with Lego club for children.
  • YMCA East Surrey Face2Face Befriending is a volunteer-led group of parents and carers who have a child or young person with a disability who offer friendship and support to other parents or carers of children with additional needs or disabilities.

Past showcases and why we hold them

We have held three additional needs service showcases this year. Our reason for doing so is simple, Parent/Carers had told us they are sometimes not aware of local support services. We wanted to help by gathering a number of services together at once and inviting those who were interested to drop in.
