Moving to Surrey
If you are moving to Surrey with a child who has an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, you should speak to the relevant SEND team for your new area before you move.
When you move, your child's EHC plan (with all other documents relevant to your child's SEND) will be transferred to us from the local education authority where you live.
We then become responsible for making sure your child receives the support outlined in the EHC plan. We will have six weeks to decide whether to review the EHC plan and/or make any new assessment.
If the move means your child is now too far away from the school named in the EHC plan to attend it, we will need to name a new school. In this instance, we might need your child to go to a school of our choice temporarily, to allow enough time for you to visit schools and discuss your options.
We will always consult with you over changes to your child's EHC plan and you can give a preference for a school.

Finding the right school
By moving to Surrey, the school named in your child's EHC plan could now be too far away for them to attend. In this case, Surrey will need to name an appropriate new school to meet your child's needs.
During this decision-making process, you might be asked to place your child in a school of Surrey's choice temporarily. This allows time to visit other schools and discuss options. The SEN team will always consult with you over changes to your child's EHC plan, and you can tell us your preference for a school.
You can find out more about schools in Surrey for children and young people with an EHC plan, in the following guides.
- Finding the right primary school in Surrey for children with an EHC plan.
- Finding the right secondary school in Surrey for students with an EHC plan.
If your child has special educational needs and/ or disabilities, but no EHC plan, you should contact Surrey's school admissions team to apply for a place.
