Step by step process for home adaptations

Step 5 - building work starts

Before the work starts, a pre-start meeting with the following people should happen:

  • you and your child/young person, if they would like to attend
  • your child/young person's Occupational Therapist (OT)
  • Housing Improvement Agency (HIA)/surveyor/architect
  • District/Borough (D/B) Council grants team
  • the builder.

This meeting will confirm:

  • what building work is going happen
  • any deviation from the agreed plans (which will cause building and funding delays)
  • any further changes highlighted (which will need reviewing immediately by all parties before proceeding).

Any deviations from the agreed plans will cause building and funding delays. Any changes highlighted will need reviewing immediately by all parties before proceeding. Please raise any concerns about the building work to the project manager immediately. Once the building work starts, please talk to your project manager as soon as possible.

Your contractor/builder must inform all parties of any changes as soon as possible. Their proposed changes need OT and D/B Council approval.

Start dates depend on the builder's availability. Building work causes considerable disruption to your home, including dust and noise. This will need to be considered depending on your child/young person's needs. Any temporary rehousing options may start at this stage. Please refer to Step 4 - planning and quotes for further details.

Unforeseen problems in the structure of your home may cause delays. For example damp, foundation and tree root issues. All parties should be notified as and when they arise.
