At this stage, the following professionals can provide input:
- Surveyor/architect/project manager
- District/Borough (D/B) Council, including the planning department
- Home Improvement Agency (HIA)
- Your child/young person's Occupational Therapist (OT).
Their role is to:
- Check if the adaptations are possible
- Drawing up the plans
- Ensure your child/young person's OT agrees with the plans
- Ensure the family/parent/carers agree with the plans
- Check ownership and get permission for the work
- Provide an initial cost estimate for different funding options
- Getting planning permission (if required)
- Producing a Schedule of Work (SoW)
- Finding contractors to prove quotes and appointing one for the work
- Secure funding before any work starts
- Arranging and attending pre-start meetings
- Starting and overseeing the building work
- Ensuring the work meets building standards
- Arranging and attending a sign-off/completion meeting to identify any snags if needed.
If you have a HIA they will become your main point of contact at this stage. If you are not using a HIA then contact your local D/B Council.
