Pilot play and leisure activities for children with Additional Needs

We are excited to let you know that Surrey County Council has awarded £500,000 of grant funding to enable a range of new, inclusive, community-based activities for children with additional needs and disabilities across the county. This funding has gone to a mix of different organisations, such as sports clubs, leisure centres, charities and activity providers, to support them to provide inclusive opportunities that better meet the needs of a wider range of children. These new pilot projects will be delivering after school, at weekends and during the holidays through to the end of March 2025. In particular, this means that there will be a number of extra activities running during the February half-term holidays.

These pilot projects will complement the existing Short Breaks Play and Leisure services funded by Surrey County Council. You can find out more about these schemes on our Short Breaks webpage.

Feedback about the pilot play and leisure activities

Whilst we expect that these new schemes will be suitable for many children with additional needs, we also realise that not every activity will be suitable for every child. With this in mind, we want to hear from you about your experiences of engaging with the different projects, to help us learn more about what works and what things we may need to rethink in the future. To support with this, we ask that you complete a short feedback survey.

Frequently asked questions

The activities outlined here are currently running to end March. At this stage we can't confirm if these or similar activities will be available in the following financial year (April onwards). However we will be evaluating their impact and benefits for families and will share any further information about activities beyond March on this page.

Funding available through the Community Inclusion Grants Fund is specifically to create more inclusive provision in Surrey. All of the providers being supported have set out how they will provide new or increased inclusive provision for children with disabilities and their families, which in some cases involves adapting services, expanding the amount of inclusive provision they offer, or introducing new equipment or resources to support inclusion.

Providers are also encouraged to make services accessible to children with a wide range of needs and disabilities, but there may be circumstances where a child's needs mean the provider is not able to support them safely and therefore cannot accommodate them.

The funding process was designed to seek to encourage more provision in areas where there is relatively less Short Breaks provision currently, including in Surrey Heath, although no provision in Surrey Heath is currently being supported through the scheme. We are actively looking at possible ways to address this going forward. Meanwhile, families in Surrey Heath are free to access provision in neighbouring boroughs if this is feasible for them.

A primary objective of the fund is to create more inclusive provision within mainstream services, that is, within services which are open to all children and which are not specifically designed to support children with disabilities, and which those children might not usually be able to access easily or safely. Our aim in this is to broaden the range of activities in Surrey accessible to those children and their families. We recognise that the reference to mainstream provision may be confusing, therefore we have amended the title of this page to make it clearer.
